Case Study - Deskjobs Illustration

This illustration was part of a brand identity for Deskjobs, the music project of Drew Connelly. The idea was to capture the drudgery of corporate burnout with the desire for something better.
Case Study - Deskjobs Illustration

When Drew Connelly asked me to design the brand identity for his music project, Deskjobs, I was stoked. Kicking things off with an illustration felt like the perfect way to set the tone and spark ideas for colors and themes.

There wasn't a specific direction, so I utilized song lyrics, titles, and the artist bio to determine common themes and draw something based around that.

"We don’t have a lot of time on this earth! We weren’t meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about mission statements."

I envisioned scenes from the movie Office Space and channeled my own experience of sitting at a desk all day drinking coffee and energy drinks to stay focused. Feeling trapped in the hustle and grind. One of his most popular songs is titled "What's So Bad About Feeling Good?" So I used that in my art.

Rough Sketches

I sat down to sketch some initial concepts, and this one stuck.

Refinement

I decided to turn the guy into a skeleton to drive home the drudgery. Staying late until all ours of the night while life passes you by. Subtle references to other songs on the posters in the background. I took the sketches into Procreate and fleshed out the illustration and inks.
